“It’s less of a waste of time than to fret over the unpredictability of such an unexpected thing, don’t you think?” Mitsunari replied simply. The fox liked to think he adapted to situations well – and for the most part, he did. Even when he did fret, he tended to recover more quickly than others, depending on the exact situation and its severity. Mitsunari also preferred to prepare for most foreseeable outcomes, if he wasn’t being arrogant and ignoring them. Though he wouldn’t have completely anticipated this man’s arrival, he had been prepared for such a thing, just as he was prepared to handle the situation were this Cao Pi to betray him – though, admittedly, he was willing to bet that such a thing would not come to pass.

“I suppose I can set aside more time to orient yourself to our environment,” the fox agreed, and he began to lead the way throughout the camp. “Odawara Castle is currently under the occupation of the Hojo – and they are the last of the formidable forces to oppose my lord. Laying siege to this castle is the key to unification.” He slowed, taking a moment to observe the soldiers as he passed them. “We’ve been waiting, however. My thought is that they do not have enough supplies to last. We, however, are more than well-equipped to outlast them. They will either surrender, or starve.”

It was then that, briefly, Mitsunari frowned, lightly rapping his fan against the palm of his hand in thought. Then, to mask his discontent, he scoffed. “However, it appears that many are growing impatient. Naturally, they dislike waiting. Fortunately, I doubt they will act upon it. Doing so would be foolish.” Mitsunari could understand the cause for impatience – especially given how close they were to achieving his lord’s dream. Still, what difference would another month add? Minimal lives would be claimed, and on both sides, at that. Was that not preferable?

“Nearly two months have passed – but we are close. I can see it. The smoke from the fires used to cook their meals have been fewer and further between. They are rationing more and more. They are desperate.”

He followed him through the camp, noting the similarities and differences in comparison to his own time, and admittedly, not recognizing certain objects at all. When Mitsunari had to get busy, maybe it wouldn’t hurt to wander on his own and learn a few things from others. He was listening to the fox’s explanation while his gaze trailed elsewhere, but the sound of the tessen snapped his attention fully back to him.

If almost two months have already passed, then how much longer would they be waiting for? How much was ‘close’? Cao Pi wondered if he would be here that long, or if he was here on borrowed time. However, if he would be staying… then maybe it would be a good thing. Assuming this wasn’t some form of warped place (he’d yet to fully grasp the reality of his surroundings), he may be able to observe Mitsunari in his own life. Perhaps he would even learn more of him as a person, if he got lucky, and experience here could prove worthwhile once he found a way to return. Although, he wasn’t sure if his presence would cause things to change, or if him being here when he wasn’t supposed to be was significant at all. Surely this had more meaning than coincidence.

Cao Pi inwardly sighed – he needed to slow his thoughts down. It hadn’t been long since he first arrived, after all. Still, with almost two months of waiting around this place, his arrival must have been considered quite the event, no? How dreadfully boring.

❝Your patience throughout this matter is admirable,❞ he commented. ❝While I understand the impatience others may have from two months of waiting around, it would be foolish to cave in now. Do those within the castle have no ability to retaliate?
